Europe names its first device assessments
Europe has named the first two medical devices selected for Joint Clinical Assessment under the EU HTA Regulation, with two further devices already in the pipeline.
22 September 2026
Europe just put names to its first medtech joint clinical assessments, and they're both mitral valve systems.
A draft European Commission Implementing Decision under the EU HTA Regulation (2021/2282) sets out the first two medical devices selected for Joint Clinical Assessment (JCA) at Union level:
- SAPIEN M3 Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement System (Edwards Lifesciences)
- HIGHLIFE Trans-Septal Mitral Valve Replacement System (HighLife SAS)
Both are first-in-class transcatheter mitral valve replacement systems for patients with moderate-to-severe or severe mitral regurgitation who a heart team judges unsuitable for surgery or transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. The HTACG recommended them on 22 June 2026, and the selection is explicitly aligned with the Commission's Safe Hearts cardiovascular plan.
And the pipeline is already growing: on 16 September 2026 the HTACG adopted a second recommendation covering two more medical devices. Those names aren't public yet; they'll follow once the Commission decision is adopted and the devices are certified.
What this signals for medtech teams
- High-risk, implantable cardiovascular technology is first through the door.
- Selection runs on a roughly quarterly cadence, so the eligible pool is being worked through steadily.
- A JCA is a shared clinical assessment. Pricing, reimbursement and adoption stay national, but the clinical evidence conversation is now happening once, at EU level.
If your device could be in scope, the evidence expectations of a JCA are not something to meet after selection. The next HTACG meeting is 22 October 2026.
Status note: the naming decision for the first two devices is at draft stage under Article 7(4); formal adoption and publication follow.
